Wriggle and Rhyme music programmes celebrates its 11th birthday

Why do we SING to celebrate birthdays?

October is Wriggle and Rhyme’s birthday month.  We’re turning 13 … can you believe it?

When I ran the very first Wriggle and Rhyme class from my lounge in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, I never imagined that it would be where it is today.

We currently have a thriving team of branches running baby and toddler classes in MELKBOSSTRAND, RONDEBOSCH, CLAREMONT and MEADOWRIDGE.

We also have a team of pre-school teachers offering our pre-school programme to hundreds of children across the Southern Suburbs and South Peninsula of Cape Town.

Our 13th birthday gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect with gratitude!

Usually, when there’s a birthday … there’s a celebration, often a cake or some special snacks and usually we SING to the birthday boy / girl!

This got me thinking, why do we SING at birthdays?

If you think about it, we usually only spontaneously sing together at a gathering of some kind – whether it’s a wedding, a funeral, a church meeting, sports match etc.

Often the singing is there to demonstrate the unity of our purpose as a group.  I know that seems a bit deep for a birthday party, but I think there’s something to it.

Singing demonstrates to the birthday boy / girl that we are deeply united in our purpose to celebrate with  them.  So much so, that we sing!

I’m sure there must be deeper cultural or anthropological meanings that I could dig up, as to how singing in groups came about.

But for now, I just LOVE that we sing at birthday parties.

Happy birthday sheet music
The well known tune for HAPPY BIRTHDAY used in many countries across the world!

Singing is such a joyful and visible expression of the ties that bind us!

So, I hope that lots of our Wriggle and Rhyme family will sing happy birthday to us this month.  If, for no other reason, than WE LOVE TO HEAR YOU SING!
