A new chapter for our Fish Hoek branch!

Jo Cook is the newest member of the Wriggle and Rhyme team.  She has taken over our Fish Hoek branch from Lauren Harper, who has done a fantastic job of running classes in the area for the past 5 years.

We caught up with Jo to find out more about what led her to Wriggle and Rhyme.

Jo, please tell us a bit about yourself?

When I was a baby I used to soothe myself to sleep in the tune of the lullaby my mom sang to me. Music and Drama have been a part of my life since before I can remember. I studied piano and singing while I was at school. Then, I went on to meet my future husband, Mike, and major in English and Drama at Rhodes University.  After my degree, I finished a  post-graduate diploma at UCT in high school teaching.

My first teaching post was at Edgemead High School where I worked for 2 years. We then moved to Joburg (where I grew up), got married and I taught for another 15 years.

Mike and I have just celebrated our 17 year wedding anniversary!  We have 4 busy and beautiful kids: Samuel is 13, Isla is 10, Toby is 7 and Ellen is 2. My 3 bigger kids all attend Fish Hoek Primary, and Ellen is about to start school at The Barn. My house is loud and chaotic, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

What have you been doing recently?

Two years ago, we relocated from Joburg to Fish Hoek. At that point, Mike and I decided that it would be best if I didn’t work for a time while the family settled into a new rhythm. I started attending “Stay and Play” run by St Peters Church, with my 2 year old Ellen. I loved it so much that I began volunteering to assist with the leadership of this lovely moms and babies / toddler ministry. It is here where I discovered my love for this age group.

Who did you choose Wriggle and Rhyme?

Wriggle and Rhyme feeds so many of my loves: kids, music, performance and teaching. When the opportunity arose to take over the Fish Hoek branch from Lauren, it was a gift that I feel was tailormade for me. The fact that Kirsty is the Programme Director left me even more confident that this was the right fit, as she is just fantastic!

What are you most excited about?

I can’t wait to watch the kids in my classes blossom and grow as they journey through the musical adventure that awaits them. The greatest joy of teaching is to see the children you teach light up as their minds and souls develop.

Jo will be offering our WRIGGLER (baby) and RHYMER (toddler) classes from her home in Fish Hoek
