It’s Mother’s Day this weekend in South Africa and that’s always worth celebrating.
So, we’ve been thinking a lot about what motherhood means … and the role that our mother’s voice has had in our lives.
In our Wriggle and Rhyme baby and toddler classes, we have the privilege of meeting and getting to know loads of new and experienced moms.
These moms tirelessly put their needs aside to nurture and care for their little ones.
When their own children are grown, often they keep caring for their grandchildren and showing unconditional love and support to their extended families too.
Our mother’s voice
We all know and recognise our mother’s voice. Her actual voice evolves over the years. From a voice that soothes and comforts to one that instructs, guides, encourages.
When we become mothers, we develop our own voice … shaped by many influences, including the influence of our own mother or mother figures in our life.
Even when a mother dies, her voice still echos in the minds and consciences of her children.
The songs our mothers sang
Moms are often singers. Not professional singers, but rather women who sing to encourage, soothe and comfort their children.
A mother’s voice is the most recognisable and comforting sound to a newborn baby.

Did you ever sing to your newborn baby? If you did, it might have been a song that your own mother sang to you!
MUSIC has a way of connecting us to our cultures and traditions – whether the wider culture of our community or the culture of our nuclear family.
Mothers listening to mothers
Mothers enjoy the support of other mothers. We see that each week in our classes.
Learning from each other and hearing different voices speak into our mothering journey, can be a really valuable and precious part of our growth as moms.
However you choose to celebrate MOTHER’S DAY this year, may the voice of the mothers in your life be a comfort and encouragement to you.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
