Musical Ubuntu at the Silvermine Music Academy!

This term, our Founder and Programme Director, Kirsty Savides is in the classroom teaching a class at SUNBIRD PRE-PRIMARY, as part of the Silvermine Music Academy programme.  SUNBIRD is the Grade R feeder school to Sun Valley Primary School.

Starting with Baby and Toddler Music Classes in Cape Town …

The Wriggle and Rhyme music and movement programme was launched in 2008 with baby and toddler classes in Fish Hoek.  Just like those little babies and toddlers, the programme has grown and matured.  We now offer baby and toddler music classes across Cape Town – in Melkbosstrand, Panorama, Rondebosch, Claremont, Meadowridge, Constantia and Fish Hoek.

Growing into Pre-School …

In addition to the baby and toddler programmes, for the past 7 years, we have been offering classes for older children at a range of partner pre-schools across Cape Town.

Our older programmes are more advanced … Froggie has retired from them and we focus on broadening our understanding of musical concepts, stretching social skills and connecting with our emotions in music.

Froggie  is enjoying retirement when he reaches our pre-school programmes … 😄

… into Grade R …

Having written the programmes and trained others to teach them, Kirsty has taken up one teaching slot this term for SUNBIRD PRE-PRIMARY Grade Rs at the Silvermine Music Academy.

Kirsty says …

“It was such a joy to meet the enthusiastic little Grade Rs.  They were so excited to be doing Wriggle and Rhyme and had so many stories to tell and information to share.

We’re exploring MUSICAL UBUNTU together this term … using music to explore themes like self esteem, self worth, interpersonal skills, team work and sharing.

We use instruments of the orchestra – which are beautiful and valuable on their own, but even richer and more beautiful when played together – to illustrate these themes.

The class is packed with activity and musical exploration, as well as lots of opportunities to build stronger listening and social skills.

The children responded so well to their first class.  All of the songs are original to Wriggle and Rhyme, so were new to them.  But, they enthusiastically started singing along with me.  By the end of the term, I’m sure we’ll have a beautiful little choir!”

The privilege of music education with little people …

It’s such a privilege to be involved in music education with little people.  Babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers are such a delight to be around and it’s a joy to be a small part of their life journey.
